Description

Okay, so this is my Pokeswap picture for :iconstacinadia: ! I really hope they enjoy this picture, it took me FOREVER TO DO. I tried so hard and despite the lameness of the grass I am quite proud of this piece.

*StaciNadia requested the following pokemon: Purrloin, Espeon, Umbreon, Clefable, Gengar, and Misdreavus. I am sorry that I only drew one pokemon, I started to become strapped for time. HOWEVER - I had first started drawing them all in a picture so if requested I can try to finish it sometime just as a nice gift. :)

So again, this is for :iconstacinadia: and I hope they enjoy it! :)

I'd actually argue that the grass is one of the better elements on this page.

The most immediate issue that I see is that the pumpkins and the Pokemon utilize line art (very clear black lines outlining them), while it looks like nothing else does, which doesn't add to the unity of the piece. It seems like you had the pokemon and pumpkins drawn out, and sort of added the grass, moon, and fireflies/stars as an afterthought. The fireflies and stars look a bit too similar as well, and you probably ought to take steps to differentiate them. Of course, if they're ALL fireflies, then the piece really needs some stars - unless it's really cloudy (and then you won't see the moon), or if it's a really bright environment - the sort of lighting you would get in a city (and then we REALLY need to see where that light's coming from).

You have a good sense of color here, so you can probably graduate to not relying on the line art - your linework isn't all that strong; there's no line variation, and they don't communicate things that the color wouldn't be able to do. If you took all the line art on this page, and had the lines colored closer to the elements they encapsulate (purple for the pokemon, orange for the pumpkins), I think you'd greatly improve the piece.

Plus, when you stop thinking of your artwork in terms of "filling in the lines", and start thinking more "how does it react to the light?", you'd be surprised how much better your work gets. It seems like you're right on the precipice of that - if you want to go the digital painter route, just eschew the lines, and it seems like you're mostly there. BUT, if you're really attached the lineart, take some time to learn inking techniques. Watch all of these: [link] I'm still trying to figure this stuff out. It's tough.

Anyway, it's a nice piece. Giving you all 5 stars because I hate rating stuff.
